The Cristiani Group does not make extraordinary promises nor market “never-heard-of-before” prices. That line has sat on this site since before Insights existed. It is not a slogan. It is how we read a first number.
A printed differential that nobody else in the corridor can work is usually not a gift. It is a file that cannot be stood behind — or a file that can be stood behind only until the moment someone asks for the cargo.
This note is about that number, and about what has to sit around it before it means anything.
What a real number contains
A number that can be worked has a product attached to it, a window, a manner of delivery, and a party who can actually perform. Grade is not optional. CIF is not FOB. A trial is not a twelve-month programme. ASAP is not a date.
The desks we take seriously send the number last, or they send it with those four things already in the same paragraph. They would rather be a little high and liftable than heroic and imaginary. A band is more honest than a single figure chosen to win the email.
If the number arrives alone — no window, no port that can be used, no capacity in which the writer acts — it is not a price. It is bait.
What a circular number omits
The circular number is built to travel. It is stripped of the facts that would stop it travelling: who holds title, whether the allocation can be shown, whether the load port is open, whether the writer is a principal or a fourth forward. What remains is a differential and a procedure.
That is why the bargain looks the same in every inbox. The paper has been copied. The cargo has not. By the time a serious desk sees the number, three other desks have already asked the same question and received the same silence.
We will not market a number we cannot substantiate. Proof of product still precedes pressure. A first note that leads with the bargain, and only later with the cargo, tells us the same thing an instrument-first note tells us. Usually enough.
Why the bargain is expensive
A price that cannot be lifted wastes more than a week. It uses a name. It trains the other side to expect theatre. It puts a firm that should have been introduced once into a chain that will remember the number and forget who sent it.
We have declined to forward a figure for that reason — not because the number was unattractive, but because nothing around it could be checked. The cheaper course, on paper, was to circulate it “in case it fits.” That is how a name becomes inventory.
The cost does not show up on the recap. It shows up the next time you need the same desk to take your call.
How we read a first number
We ask the questions that belong in the first note, before we discuss the figure. In what capacity do you act. What is the product, and is the interest a single lift or a programme. Which ports or regions actually work. In what window. How do you prefer to settle once product has been shown.
If those answers exist, the number has somewhere to sit. If they do not, we do not improve the number. We stop.
None of this requires a desk to leave money on the table. A real cargo has a real price. It will not usually be the one that was designed to survive a forward.
How to begin
Please reach out to us with potential opportunities and we shall advise on a case-by-case basis. Write to business@thecristianigroup.com.
Say who you are. Say in what capacity you act. Say what you seek to source or place, the manner of delivery, the scale, the window — and then, if you wish, the number. If a relationship already sits with you, name that fact first.
The fuller account of how a file moves sits on How We Work. Why product is shown before capital is asked for sits in Proof of Product Precedes Pressure.
Replies are handled by the firm, in our own name.
