Trial Lift, Then Term
A single lift is not a programme. A programme is not a hope. We have said that before, about the first note. It is also the whole of this one.
A trial exists to prove that a chain can perform once. Term is what that proof is for. A first cargo that cannot become a second was never a trial. It was a one-off dressed as a beginning.
This note is about that order.
What a trial is for
A trial is not a smaller version of a brochure. It is a lift with a window, a product, a manner of delivery, and a counterpart who can be reached. It is sized so that both sides can see whether the file survives contact with the port, the inspector, and the other desk.
What it is not for is decoration. A trial written into a SPA so that a larger number can be advertised is not a trial. A trial with no agreed path to a second lift is a spot cargo that has borrowed a better word.
The desks we take seriously say which it is on line one. Spot, trial, or something intended to run. If the word trial is used, they can also say what would have to be true for a second lift to follow.
What has to be true before the first lift
The same questions as a first note, answered before anyone talks about volume beyond the trial. Capacity. Product. Manner of delivery, and the ports that actually work. Scale of the trial, and the window it lives in. How settlement follows once product has been shown.
Proof still precedes pressure. A trial does not earn an instrument in the first paragraph any more than a term does. If the cargo cannot be shown for the trial, it will not be shown for the year.
CIF and FOB are not the same file. They do not produce the same paper, and they do not fail in the same place. A trial should name which it is. A procedure copied from an unrelated lift and offered as the trial is theatre.
What a clean trial leaves behind
If the first lift closes cleanly, the second ought to be quieter. Names have already moved, once, with consent. The manner of delivery has been used, not described. The questions that wasted the first month do not need to be asked again.
Quieter is the point. Not larger theatre. Not a new chain. Not a number rewritten so that the second cargo looks like a bargain the first one was not. The price of a term that can be stood behind will usually sit close to the price of the trial that proved it.
We have seen the second lift go that way — less paper, fewer forwards, the same two desks. We have also declined a trial where term was never on the table, and the word was only there to make a spot file sound like a programme. The second case is the more common one.
What we will not dress up
We will not call a hope a trial. We will not attach a twelve-month figure to a cargo that has not yet moved once. We will not market an allocation we cannot substantiate in order to make the trial look like the start of something larger.
A band for the term is more honest than a single heroic number. A window for the second lift is more honest than “then we continue.” If neither can be said, say spot. Spot is a respectable word. Trial, used loosely, is not.
How to begin
Please reach out to us with potential opportunities and we shall advise on a case-by-case basis. Write to business@thecristianigroup.com.
Say who you are. Say in what capacity you act. Say whether the interest is a single lift, a trial, or something intended to run — and, if it is a trial, what would have to be true for a second lift to follow. Then the product, the manner of delivery, the window.
How a first number is read sits in Why Never-Heard-Of-Before Prices Are Rarely a Bargain. Why product is shown before capital is asked for sits in Proof of Product Precedes Pressure. The fuller account of how a file moves sits on How We Work.
